My story: I was 23 stone… now I’m an Ironman

I’ve always been a big boy…

Ever since I was a teenager I’ve been bigger than all my mates. And whilst I was a class tight head prop for Swansea Uni RFC (uppa swans), athletics has never been my forté. Once I’d stopped doing all my sport and focused on my music & DJing, the weight piled on – so when I signed up for an Ironman, everyone thought I was insane…

Or read more about my journey below…

TEENAGE YEARS

I was always bigger than other kids – gained weight easier and struggled to run it off like the others could.

It never bothered me at this age – if anything it was an advantage for rugby.

RUGBY AT SWANS UNI

By the time I was 18 I was playing for Swansea Uni Rugby in the Welsh semi-pro league

I was cruising at 120kg by this point – let’s just say a triathlon wasn’t on my mind in the scrum

EVENTS & MUSIC

Alongside rugby, I loved house music & events and after dropping out of uni to pursue a full time job in events, the rugby left me…

The boozing and party lifestyle combined with my appetite led me to pile it on…

ROCK BOTTOM

I think this photo is the heaviest I’ve ever been – I was DJing for Red Bull at a sports event. Can’t believe the size of me looking back

I know now I’ll never end up back at this weight.

TRAINING BEGINS

I began running up the Newport valleys where I’m from with the boys who helped me train and kept me accountable

It wasn’t just training my body – it was training my mindset. I needed to believe the impossible was possible

CAME INTO MY OWN

The first 3 months were hell, but as I committed and improve I started to come into my own…

Still, nothing could have prepared me for the actual race day…
